Der Auftrag von DB Cargo über 200 solcher Einheiten war der Hauptantrieb für die Entwicklung des TRAXX AC1, wie der Lok Typ im Jahr 2003 rückwirkend bezeichnet wurde. Die Bezeichnung TRAXX steht für „Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility“. Die Lokomotive, direkt abgeleitet von der Baureihe 145 nun in geänderter Bauart und Baureihenbezeichnung, war jetzt für beide in Europa üblichen Wechselspannungssysteme 15 kV/16 2/3 Hz und 25 kV/ 50 Hz einsetzbar. Bei einem Gewicht von 84 t leistet sie 5,6 MW Dauerleistung und ist für 140 km/h zugelassen.
