I 1981 modtog DSB de første ME-lokomotiver efter flere års arbejde med at finde fremtidens diesellokomotiv. ME-lokomotiverne har i deres levetid hovedsageligt kørt øst for Storebælt. I 2020 købte Nordic Re-Finance AB tre ME-lokomotiver, som fik litra TME i Sverige. Et af disse - TME 1527 - er udlejet som hjælpelokomotiv til Trafikverket i Kil.
